reminiscing

today in sociology, we talked about the poverty line in the u.s.
it's pretty ridiculous how many families are homeless--and i'm not necessary implying under the bridge, on the side of the road type of homeless. i'm talking the parents lost their jobs, so their home was possessed. father or mother finds a lower-paying job that can barely gather enough money to pay for a hotel/motel, so that's where they live. until when? who knows. it could be a few weeks, or it could be years. this is happening often, people.

watching a video where some of these homeless children was very touching. they would cheerfully state that they would live out of their vehicles, and every morning brush their teeth and wash themselves in the sink of a nearby walmart. others innocently admitted to going to bed hungry at night, having electricity shut off periodically, using candlelight to do their homework. i didn't cry, but i was very moved.
